ATypI'09. Colorful and with a mexican heart

For over 50 years, the Association Typographique Internationale had carried out their traditional typography congress in european countries (with some exceptions in the U.S. and Canada) and bringing it to a hispanic-speaking country and latin american was particularly attractive, being Charles Peignot (founder of the association in 1957) who argued that the association was a showcase for the international typographic community.

For this big event, the Universidad Anáhuac, through Ricardo Salas, Kimera was entrusted by the development of the promotional video to appear in St. Petersburg, Russia and motivate potential foreign participants.

The result was this challenging typographic video since it had to be done in 5 days and contain the most emotive, nationalistic, contextual and typographic weight that could involve and bombard its viewer. We first decided to include mexican fonts and then typefaces that allude to mexican style.

We chose to join the musical diversity of an american string quartet¹ playing one of Mexico dearest musical pieces² in a style low fidelity but exquisite academic precision.

¹Kronos Quartet
²El Sinaloense (S. Briseño)

We tried not to be restrained by the use of color and not follow the established standards of “what looks mexican,” but rather mix the collective feelings of the vernacular graphics along with the local looks local and contemporary graphics and a progressive country.

The typographic selection made tried to rescue the most eclectic and representative styles… from sober fonts for text, some others more irreverent, sans serif, dingbats, gothic, pixel, fighters, anyhow, here is the list of the selection.
